Plus-Sized Yoga
Posted by Kevin Graham
I recently discovered a new book entitled “Plus-Sized Yoga: Beginners Yoga for People of All Sizes”. It offers yoga and meditation to people no matter what shape they may be in.
If you are still in the early stages of your weight loss journey, yoga may not be at the top of your list of things to try. Most people think of yoga and they either envision monks sitting atop a mountain chanting to rocks or super-muscular folks stretching horizontally like they are trying out for Cirque du Soleil.
But for those of you who seeking dramatic weight loss, your answer to getting started with a proven, stress-free approach is here. This book by Donald ‘Keith’ Stanley promises to help you on your weight loss journey. Who knows, you may have so much success we might see under the big top.
Where do you start when you want to make a major change in your life? How do you overcome that initial inertia? Mr. Stanley suggests that you start with yoga and meditation so as to have a better chance at achieving long-term success.
According to his book: “Yoga and meditation are excellent answers. Yoga can gently produce increased flexibility. It can stimulate the organs and glands to induce a mild detoxification. And, it can generate greater confidence in your physical body.”
He also points out how meditation, the act of turning inward, can bring about a calming influence over your life. It increases your confidence– mentally and emotionally.
Personally, I was laid up for about 6 weeks roughly ten years ago. Hitting my 40’s brought me back pain and a fall on some ice while traveling in Belfast aggravated it beyond belief. Trying to avoid back surgery I was finally required to basically stay in bed, week after week. It was ridiculous.
The lethargy led to atrophy and every muscle in my body became weaker and weaker. Fed up with all the supposed experts, I went to my first yoga class. I can tell you first hand that is a powerful experience. The mental and emotional calm allows your body to solve some of its own problems. The stretching and strength derived from yoga, coupled with the power of meditation, launched me on a path where I was fully fit in a matter of months.
I do not practice regular yoga at this stage but many times I wish that I did. What I can tell you is that the fitness I exhibit today is a direct function of the ‘jump start’ that yoga, meditation and prayer offered me. So when I saw the title of this book, I had to write about it.
Working with those seeking weight loss on a regular basis, I know how hard it is for the obese to get started on the journey. It seems so daunting. But the insights in ”Plus-Sized Yoga: Beginners Yoga for People of All Sizes” will provide you the starting point to finally allow you success on your weight loss journey. This book is for you regardless of what shape you are presently in. Consider how yoga can get you started on your path to better health.
